Welcome to WISE!
We have been working hard updating our applets to canvases so that they no
longer require Java. Our confidence interval creation tool has been redone,
and is now available without Java. Check it out!
With the most recent Java update, your security settings might block our applets from running.
We are currently working on this issue. In the meantime, if you wish to unblock our applets,
you must go through a few steps in the Java Control Panel:
- Go to the Java Control Panel (On Windows Click Start and then type Configure Java)
- Click on the Security tab
- Click on the Edit Site List button
- Click the Add button
- Type http://wise1.cgu.edu
- Click the Add button again
- Click Continue and OK on the security window dialogue box
- Restart your computer
You can read more about the issue at Java.com
Our goal is to provide students and teachers of statistics easy access to a wide range of
resources that are freely available on the Internet. We invite you to explore our website and
enjoy many wonderful statistics materials from around the world.
A special feature of WISE is the sequence of interactive tutorials on key statistical
concepts (sampling distributions, the central limit theorem, hypothesis testing, and statistical
power). The tutorials use dynamic applets that allow the user to explore relationships on their
own. Guided exercises are designed to help the learner to take full advantage of the applets to
gain a deeper understanding of the concepts and logic that underlie much of inferential
We invite your feedback on WISE. If you find any errors, if you have suggestions for additions
or improvement, or if you find this site useful, we would love to hear from you. Drop us an email
NOTE: If WISE applets are not loading properly, download
and install the latest version of the free Java Runtime Environment.

A Guide can be downloaded for this game.
The WISE Bootstrapping Applet can be used to demonstrate bootstrapping by creating a confidence interval for a
population mean or median. The user can manipulate the population distribution, sample
size, and number of resamples. An associated guide gives suggestions for teaching bootstrapping.
